In memory of Prof. Henning Janssen
24.07.2026
We have received the sad news that our former colleague Prof. Henning Janssen has passed away far too soon.
Henning taught in the Game Design programme at Mediadesign Hochschule from 2014 and was appointed Professor of Game Art at the Munich campus in 2016. He later continued his work at the Berlin campus.
His particular focus lay on perspective, spatial representation, and the drawn design of fictional worlds. He understood drawing not merely as a craft skill, but as a method for exploring spaces, cultures and connections. His fully hand-drawn 360-degree panoramas show this most strikingly, bringing perspectival construction and artistic imagination together.
Many students valued his outstanding drawing ability and his independent, at times unconventional way of teaching. He took students outdoors to draw, offered additional drawing formats beyond the regular curriculum shaped around students' own questions and needs, made music together with students and colleagues, and brought new impulses into university life again and again.
Henning was especially committed to the university's participation in Munich CSD. In doing so, he helped make openness, diversity and community visible at mdh.

On 21 August, from 15:00, there will be an opportunity to remember Henning together and say goodbye at Killian's Irish Pub in Munich.
We will remember Henning Janssen as a life-affirming, creative and committed person. Our sympathies are with his family, his friends, and all who were close to him.
